The Southwestern Ontario Basketry Guild is proud to
present the basketry workshop schedule for 2025. We have a great lineup
of instructors this year that will teach students of all skill levels
new materials, processes and techniques. The blog will be updated as teachers, descriptions and photos become available. The workshops are help every third Saturday of the year (except where noted) at the
Chatham Cultural Centre. All workshops require pre-registration.

Saturday, March 15, 2025 - Martha Sands - Twill tray (all skill levels)
Students will learn to weave this beautiful tray with a twill pattern. This tray is made of
dyed and natural reed and waxed linen or artificial sinew. You
will need to bring: small packer, spoke weights, blunt tapestry needle,
small and regular sized clips, small cable ties, awl. Also bring the
regular supplies with you - bucket - table cover- towel- scisors . . .
If you have a cutting mat and would like to bring it, this will help
squaring up the base, but not necessary. Tray measures 12"L x 8"W x
3"H.
Saturday, April 19, 2025 - Nancy Hager - Willow Bark Bracelets (beginner)
Students will be preparing, cutting and weaving willow bark using different weave structures resulting in awesome bracelets! This class is a full day. Bring the usual basketry tools, plus small scissors, small clips, reading glasses (if needed) flexible measuring tape. All materials supplied.

Saturday, June 21, 2025 - Martina Obersat - Williamsburg-style Basket with Fancy Handle (beginner)

Students
will learn to weave and square a base, weave outward up the
sides following the angle of the handle and lash the rim to secure the basket.
Learn to wrap a fancy handle, if desired. You will create a useful and beautiful basket. This workshop will take most of the day (9 am - 4 pm).
Bring your basic basketry tools (small bucket or tub to hold water, old towels, sharp pair of scissors/secateurs, pencil, measuring tape, strong 10 clothes pins or clips). Basket size: base = 7" x 7"; height = 7" without handle; opening = 12" x 12".

Saturday, August 16, 2025 -Edy Marlatt - Learn to Dye (all skill levels)
Learn the difference between protein and cellulose dye formulas. Edy will teach us how to properly prepare dye baths and how to properly dye reed and textiles.
Saturday, September 20, 2025 - Martina Obersat - Japanese -style Fan (all skill levels)
Learn how to twill a flat object. Students will learn to weave this unusual fan shape using ΒΌ" flat oval reed. The body of the fan is a twill pattern and the handle is tied together using an overlapping knot. Waxed linen or waxed polyester will secure the sides. Each student should have enough time to make two.
Bring your basic basketry tools (small bucket or tub to hold water, old
towels, sharp pair of scissors/secateurs, pencil, measuring tape, strong
10 clothes pins or clips). Bring extra clips! You will need them! Please bring tapestry needle if you have one.
