The Southwestern Ontario Basketry Guild is proud to
present the basketry workshop schedule for 2024. We have a great lineup
of instructors this year that will teach students of all skill levels
new materials, processes and techniques. The blog will be updated as teachers, descriptions and photos become available. The workshops are help every third Saturday of the year (except January, February and December) at the
Chatham Cultural Centre. All workshops require pre-registration.

Saturday, March 16, 2024 - Martha Sands - Focus on Embellishment (beginner)
This simple basket will focus on three different embellishments. Students will have a choice of colour and embellishment. Basket size: base = 6" x 5"; height = 7".
Saturday, April 20, 2024 - Will and Jane Elliott - Turkey Wing Whisk (beginner)
Learn to create a small whisk broom using broomcorn (a type of sorghum). The broomcorn is tied together and the handle is then formed. This traditional form is both functional and decorative.
Saturday, May 18, 2024 - Louise Warner-MacDougall - Pine Needle Basket (beginner)
Learn the basics about pine needle coiled basketry. This is a small basket woven around a base. The pine needles students will be using are from Florida and are 10" long. Basket size: base = 4" x 4"; height = 1 1/2".
Saturday, June 15, 2024 - Christine Kelly - Old Reed Woodland Tote (beginner)
Students will learn to weave a basic tote shape: form the base, weave up the sides, create woven handles, wrap the handles and add the rim to finish. You will create a useful and beautiful basket. Christine will also share tips on staining your basket.
Saturday, July 20, 2024 - Martina Obersat - Tool Basket with Divider (beginner)
Spend the day learning to weave a sturdy and very
practical tool basket with a divider. Learn to layout and
square a rectangular base and weave the sides. Learn to insert and secure the ears of a swing handle. Learn to
weave and lash an undulating rim. The divider is woven and secured inside the basket.
This workshop will take all day (9 am - 4 pm).
Basket size: base = 9" x 7 ½"; height = 6"to 8" without handle; opening = 13" x 9".
Saturday, August 17, 2024 -Nancy Hager - Rope Mats & Bowl (beginner)
Learn to tie a Turks head knot and fashion it into mats and a bowl using rope.
Saturday, September 21, 2024 - Martha Sands - Canister basket (beginner)
Students will have the opportunity to use a variety of barks and plants to create
a canister basket. They will learn about the harvesting of barks and various
plants. They will learn when and how to harvest, and how to cure the barks and
plants for basket making.
Basket size is 4"x4"x5", all levels skill level. Bring your basketry tools and a tapestry needle.
Saturday, October 19, 2024 - Martina Obersat - Hen Basket (beginner)
Learn the basics of rib basketry. This hen basket is fairly large
and sturdy traditional basketry form--use it to store yarn, fabric or
socks! Learn how to create the handle using three round oak
hoops (two 8" hoops and a 12" central hoop) and learn to insert all ribs and create the basket’s unusual form. This is an
intermediate beginner basket--helps to have woven a basket or
two but not necessary. Basket size: base = 12" x 8"; height = 13".
